Services
The mobile workshop van stocks a broad range of spare parts, drumheads, and the necessary tools to allow drum and percussion instruments to be serviced, tuned and repaired on the spot. We recommend that school instruments be serviced every 12 months, in order to keep them working and sounding their best, and achieve the maximum lifespan from each one.
Timpani
Rhythm Restorations has serviced more timpani in this country than any other repairer. Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Opera Australia rely on Rhythm Restorations for their timpani repairs and maintenance.
All brands and types of timpani are serviced and repaired mostly on-site, with more extensive repairs and full rebuilds carried out in the workshop.
Keyboard percussion
Tuned percussion instruments such as marimbas, xylophones, vibraphones, glockenspiels, tubular bells are accepted for minor repairs through to complete restoration. Orff classroom instruments are serviced with new pins and cords.
A re-tuning service is also available for all keyboard mallet instruments.
Drum-kits
Being the most used and abused instrument in a school music department, drum kit repairs make up the bulk of our on-site visits. We can offer advice on the best way to protect your hard working kits, as well as keep them at their best for your important performances.
Classic and vintage restoration work is our specialty, including custom bearing edges, drum shell repairs, re-wrapping, chrome restoration, metal polishing and custom lacquer finishes.
About Dave Egan
Dave Egan has built Rhythm Restorations from an idea in the mid 1990’s, to today, where it is the respected authority on all facets of percussion repair and maintenance. His knowledge and experience is valued by top professional players and senior educators.
~ His own career in music began at age 9 studying drums with respected Sydney drummer John Costa. He turned semi professional at age 14 and took up his musical career full time when he finished school in 1979. He became a busy drummer in the Sydney freelance scene and also spent the next 25 years teaching in various schools, colleges and music shops.
~ Always a keen car enthusiast, Dave enrolled in TAFE as a journeyman panel beater and graduated winning the prize for best student. He went on to work part time in an auto-body repair workshop, dealing in all areas of automotive body repair and re-finishing. More study followed, enrolling in TAFE School of Engineering where he completed 3 years of Fitting and Machining. Over the years he has owned and restored many older cars, currently he has a 1971 Mustang Mach 1 and his wife’s 1966 Rambler Classic.
~ With over 40 years as a professional musician, he has performed in the USA, England, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and has toured Australia many times over. Dave is still one of Sydney’s most respected drummers.
~ His drumming credits include:
> 1980-85 Touring Australia with bands on the rock circuit;
> Over 10 years in professional theatre shows including “CATS”, “Les Miserables”, “Starlight Express”, “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, “Miss Saigon”, “Beauty and The Beast” and “Godspell".
> In 1998 Dave took up a full time position in the Royal Australian Air Force – Air Command Band as the Principal Drumkit player and Percussion section leader. Highlights were the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and a Tour of Duty to East Timor.
> He has also been a member of the well-known party band “Enormous Horns” (1990-92) then 2007 - present.
